I.        Introduction

A.       Course topic - The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit.

1         There are nine gifts of the Spirit -1 Corinthians 12:8-10.

2        There are nine ministries of the Holy Spirit:

a         5 fold ministry - Ephesians 4:11.

b         4 fold ministry -1 Corinthians 12:28.

B.       Course will concentrate on the Spirit and its operation.

1         I Corinthians 2:14.

2        All manifestations and operations of the Holy Spirit are SUPERNATURAL!

II.       In Depth Instruction On Spiritual Gifts - I Corinthians 12,13,14

A.       I Corinthians 12:1:

1         There are two types of ignorances.

2         Corinthians were ignorant in

A. Uses of the gifts,      

  B.Employment of the gifts.          

  C. Control of the gifts

                         D. Laws  Governining the gifts

III.  Testing the Supernatural - I Corinthians 12:3

A.       Gifts always operate in line with and according to the Word of God.

B.       There are counterfeits.                                                                 

IV.      Are the Gifts of the Spirit for Today?

A.       Acts 2:38-39, Mark 16:16-18.

B.  Some teach that the gifts were to cease.

C.        I Corinthians 13:8:

1            v 8; 1 John 3:2.

2            v 9-10.

3                  vll.

4         v 12 - darkly (Greek - obscure meaning).

V.       Purpose of the Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit A.       Ephesians 6:13-18.

1         The gifts are weapons of our warfare.

2        Importance of their usage - 1 Corinthians 12:1. C.       Purposes:

1         To manifest the Body of Christ on earth - John 14:16-17. a         I Corinthians 12:13-14.

b        John 14:12 - If the church is to be as effective as Christ was, it must operate in the same power.

2         To assist in evangelizing the world - Mark 16:17-18. a         Acts 3:1-12.

b        Acts 8:5-6.

     

c         Acts 14:8-11,
d         Hebrews 2:3-4.

To edify the church:

a         I Corinthians 14:3.

b         I Corinthians 14:12.    

For deliverance of God's people: a Acts 16:23-26.

For perfecting the church - Ephesians 4:11-13


VI.      How Do We Get Spiritual Gifts?

A.       Distinguish between gifts and ministries:

1         Ministry gifts are given by Jesus -1 Corinthians 12:5,

Ephesians 4:7-11. -

2        Gifts are given by the Holy Spirit -1 Corinthians 12:4, 12:11.

B.       Be filled with the Holy Spirit:

1         Gifts not available to non-spirit filled believers:

a        Old Testament - upon

b        Church age - fill and indwell - John 14:17.

VII.       Do Individuals Operate the Gifts as They Please?

A.       I Corinthians 12:11:

1         v!8

2         v24

3         v28

B.       The individual may choose whether or not to operate in the gift.

1         Matthew 25:14-15.-

C.       Examples:

1         Acts 3:1-4

D.       As stated earlier some are more sensitive to one gift.

IX.      General Facts About the Nine Gifts

A.       Gifts blend with one another.

B.       Gifts of the Spirit also operated in the Old Testament.

1        7 gifts of the Spirit in the Old Testament.

2        Tongues is the evidence of the indwelling of the Spirit which is unique to this dispensation (John 14:17).

X.       I Corinthians 13 - Love Chapter

A.       Understanding the Context:

1         I Corinthians 12:12

2         Conclusion:

a         Gifts are not a maturity measuring stick,

 b         Not an indication of how important you are.

3         Paul strengthens his argument concerning this by showing the importance of love.

B.        I Corinthians 13:1-3:

1         You must be motivated by love.

2         Guidelines for using the gifts.

C.        I Corinthians 13:4-7

1            Conclusions we can draw from v4.

2             Conclusions we can draw from v5.

3             Conclusions we can draw from v6.

4             Conclusions we can draw from v7.

XI.      Nine Gifts of the Spirit A.       Tongues

1         Definition: The ability to speak supernaturally by the holy Spirit in a language not know by the speaker.

2         I Corinthians 12:10

a        Tongues is the initial evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

3         Do I have to speak in tongues to be filled with the Holy Spirit?

a         Initial evidence - Acts 2:4

b        Tongues are used as a prayer language - Jude 20

c         Tongues can be used as a tool to intercession - Romans 8:26 d        The gift of tongues -1 Corinthians 12:10

 e         Tongues as a sign to unbelievers - I Corinthians 14:22,

Acts 2:7-11.

4         Some specifics concerning tongues:

a         I Corinthians 14:2

5         Instructions concerning usage of the gift of tongues:

a         Definition: The ability to interpret supernaturally an

utterance of the gift of tongues,

4         Rules concerning the interpretation of tongues:

Prophecy                                                      

1         This is the third and the most important gift of inspiration.

a        Definition: The ability to speak supernaturally by the Holy Spirit in a known tongue.

What the gift of prophecy is not:

1.        Preaching ,

2         The office of a prophet

3         Foretelling the future

What the gift of prophecy is - I Corinthians 14:3:

1         Edification

2        Exhortation

       Comfort  

Rules governing the use of the gift of prophecy are the same as those governing tongues and interpretation.

a         I Corinthians 14:33

b        Be recognized by authority.Pastor  

I.        Revelational Gifts: Word of wisdom, word of knowledge,      discerning of spirits.

These are the gifts that help you to know something.

A      Word of Wisdom:  

1     Definition : The supernatural revelation by the Holy spirit concerning the divine purpose and will of God.

2         The word of wisdom always speaks concerning future events, a        Acts 11:27-30

              Acts 21:10-11

3         The    word of wisdom can be conditional:

a          II Kings 10:1

b       Jonah - the destruction of Nineveh.

4         Four kinds of wisdom:

          a.       Wisdom of Satan,

           b.         Wisdom of the natural man.

           c.        Wisdom of the spiritual man.

           d.       Gift of the word of wisdom.

5         The word of wisdom can be used to assure us of God's protection:

a         Acts 27:10

 b         Acts 27:24

6       Old Testament examples:

              d.      David

             e.        Joel

7         Ways that the word of wisdom is manifested.
